Format & activities (Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014)
Tutorial: 4 hours
We begin with a 4-hour tutorial offered by the organizers in the morning, covering the social theories in details for the attendees. The format alternates between different lecture parts about (1) proxemic theory foundations, (2) territoriality theories and research, (3) applied theories for HCI context and the interaction with interactive surfaces; and different activities for all participants gathering feedback and thoughts and triggering discussions for the later part of the workshop.
Workshop: 4 hours
All participants would give brief overview of their work (~3 mins each, pecha kucha style), highlighting the specific social theories they apply (or adapt) in their research, then follow-on activities including:

Workshop: 4 hours
All participants would give brief overview of their work (~3 mins each, pecha kucha style), highlighting the specific social theories they apply (or adapt) in their research, then follow-on activities including:
- Brainstorming session for gathering main challenges and topics that people would like to discuss. We will start with seed topics identified in people's position papers, and then smaller break-out sessions afterwards to discuss these topics in detail.
- Discussion of the specific challenges of applying social theory, which was designed and reported for a different purpose than HCI. We are in particular interested in the lessons people have learned from adapting these techniques to their own work. For these discussions, we will switch between focused break-out groups and whole group discussions (and also adapt these activities depending on the size of the group).
- Creating large collage/map visualizing the scope, overlap, and relations between social theories in proxemics, territoriality, and environmental psychology (joint activity of all participants).
Tutorial topics
The tutorial topics will cover a number of theories and frameworks related to interactive surfaces, including:
Proxemic theory foundations

Territoriality theories and research
Grounding Theory & communication phases [Clark & Brennan 1991]
Territoriality [Scott 2004]
Distributed Cognition [Hutchins]
Situation Awareness [Endsley]
